best movie to watch for testing the quality of a home theater?

which is the best (scene in an action)movie to watch for testing the quality of a home theater system?

You really should have the gamut for testing. Action movies, drama, comedy, even musicals. These all should used to test a theater.

Also don’t under estimate test equipment and test disks. A good spl meter and source disk can go a long way in making a system. All to often a improper set up is a major headache down the road.

  • I would have to say. Top Gun. Watch the movie on your home system . Sounds like jets flying all over your house. As far as which scene. Just about all of the movie.

  • I always use Star Wars: Episode 1, the pod race scenes.

  • Transformers action scenes – there are a few toward the beginning and the battle toward the end is a good one. You want speed, special effects, and high quality digital.

  • For testing picture quality "The Fifth Element" has been the standard, especially when the blue opera singer is on the ship and the Earth is behind her, the colors are fantatsic.

Audio, wow you can choose alot. Transformers for deep bass (especially the pulse gun scene) where the Transformer launches himself over the screaming woman,

Airforce One when the jets are launching the missles.

Matrix is a good one. The lobby shoot out scene and Bullet time on the roof (good for surrounds).

Superman Returns (plane falling out of sky scene)

Pretty much any Bluray or HD-DVD lossless audio scene will make your system sound awesome.

  • Well.. an audio CD is un-compressed while a DVD is compressed. And chances are you have a favorite CD that you have listened to many times and will quickly help you decide if you like the ‘flavor’ of a speaker system.

But – it is fun to walk in with a DVD to test things.

Try "Star Trek: First Contact" – Chapter 2. This scene has male/female voices, some music and special effects. A good mix in about 5 minutes and you can pick up this disk for about $8.

"Toy Story 2 – Chapter 1" – Buzz is fighting androids and Zurg but there is a surprising amount of complex special effects, low-frequency sounds in this chapter.

"The Matrix – Lobby Shoot out scene" – When this movie came out – there was a rash of "My Receiver went into PROTECT mode during the lobby scene in the Matrix" posts. Lots of subwoofer sounds.

"Saving Private Ryan" – Uhhhh The Normandy beach scene does have lots of effects. But this is a enactment of a real, horrific battle. Would you walk into a store and play a scene of the airplane hitting the twin towers on 9/11 just because it had great effects? Think of this movie in a similar light.
